Burlington, NC - A beautiful day

Burlington sits about 113 miles up I-85 from Charlotte — close enough that the Lyriq makes the round trip without a single charging stop, and close enough for a real day trip rather than an expedition. What's out there is a different kind of North Carolina than the mountains: mill town history instead of ridgelines, brick and clapboard instead of timber and stone.

The obvious starting point is downtown — the Downtown Burlington Historic District, forty-some buildings anchoring the old central business district, added to the National Register back in 1990. From there it's a short drive to the East Davis Street Historic District, a quieter residential stretch, and Beverly Hills, the largest of the three at over a hundred contributing buildings — a planned early-20th-century subdivision that's aged into something genuinely handsome rather than just old.

But the place that's actually worth the trip on its own is Glencoe Mill Village, a few minutes outside downtown along the Haw River. It's one of the best-preserved 19th-century textile mill villages left in the Southeast — an 1880s cotton mill built in a surprisingly ornate Italianate style, three stories of brick with a central tower and arched windows, standing over two streets of the small worker houses that once surrounded it. The mill closed in 1954 and the whole district has been slowly restored since, which means it reads less like a museum piece and more like a town that quietly kept living in its own history. It's the kind of place built for driving slow with the windows down and stopping wherever the light looks right.

None of this requires planning around a charging stop or a long day behind the wheel — that's most of the appeal of doing it in the Lyriq, and most of the appeal of not driving it yourself either.

Coach EV runs the same flat $40-an-hour rate on a Burlington day trip as it does across town — no minimum, nothing hidden. Reserve a ride and spend the day looking at the architecture instead of the road.
